Panel Discussion - Diversity: Our Strength? At the panel discussion for the launch of Coach House Books' The State of the Arts: Living with Culture in Toronto (uTOpia vol. II), moderator Misha Glouberman made a provocative suggestion regarding Toronto's cultural identity. He suggested that the two things that people are most excited about when they talk about Toronto ? our multiculturalism and our vibrant arts scene -- rarely cross over, at least in public perception. Indeed, the independent arts community of which Wavelength is a part, is primarily composed of white downtowners. There are other arts and cultural scenes in the city we're barely aware of. Why are we "indie kids" unwilling or unable to engage in a dialogue with the rest of the city?
Rather than debate this question or point fingers, at this panel we seek proactive solutions, and posit that an intercultural exchange between communities may not only strengthen Toronto's social fabric, but may also result in some exciting and uniquely Torontonian art. How can we work to make this happen?

People get better. They can get better and being worse, you know.
However, (good) bands learn to improve because they:
- pay attention - pay attention to others - pay attention to themselves
The following are a list of bands, mostly locals and some down the 401, whom I think are going to grab your attention:
Entire Cities
The number of experimental psych-country bands is escalating. Time to jump on that band wagon and start your own! But wait! Can you? It's not easy, suckas! Entire Cities are a newbie country-esque band that collaborate together to bring out the loud and cheer in you. The first time I saw them, they played a ferocious set with not enough mics to support all of their instruments and singers. However, during one song where they ended in beautiful unison, I glimpsed over to my left and saw a woman with a man, locals they probably were, listening, rocking back and forth, and crying.

The RAA (The Rural Alberta Advantage)
Songs about relationships, barren and cold lands & togetherness - all happening within the confines of Alberta, are a cool way for people of Ontario to get attached to the West. Hell, more than half of Eastern Canada doesn't know anything west of the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border (and vice-versa). Am I down with the education? If it involves some of the coolest drumming that I've ever seen and mega-quick tempo songs with cool shouts, then yea, sure. I'm down. So VERY down. What's that? Dancing? That's all you'll be doing if you listen to The RAA.

The Incidentals
Jesse Laderoute is Brian Wilson for our time. My prediction is that he'll be a revolutionary for the people within Beach-Boy music and probably crush-kill-destroy the beat machine that he once had to look after his drumming. Now that he has a full band, The Incidentals are no longer a name that Jesse can call himself when he wants to avoid a call from a girl of the past. Yup. The Incidentals are now an identity. Don't be fazed by Laderoute's cool facial expressions when he tries to expunge all of his musical guts. He's making the world better by a fraction of a percent, but that's better than nothing at all.

Barons and Lengthy
This band of youngin's have so much energy that's hard to get them off the stage to take a five-minute breather. Also, I'm pretty sure they only have ONE song that's less than four minutes in length. Although the direction is starting to come into the clear, Barons and Lengthy are just getting started. Their songs are jacked up with energy bursts which require constant movement. Most Barons' shows are hardly left at a stand-still. I'm confident of this because, well, I just am. You're just going to have to trust me.

Miracle Fortress
From this list, Montreal's Miracle Fortress is probably my favourite (or close to it). Graham Van Pelt (mem. of Think About Life) spent countless hours inside of a studio combining numerous sounds and outputs along with drums 'n loops to compile some pretty beautiful music. It has gotten to a point where Van Pelt has dedicated the majority of his time to his musical projects, especially this one. Miracle Fortress creates sky-reaching music, but seems to handle the damaged a lot better than a fairly-healed individual. Maybe it's because he's 1/3rd of Think About Life and I'm being favourable, but alas, I cannot deny something so rich in love. I really can't.

Fox Jaws (formerly Doris Day)
Barrie's got something new brewing in the pot of??Barrie. They're called Fox Jaws and they make cool music. How cool? HOW COOL? Let's just say that they made a song called 'New Body' and I'm sure that's warm beginning and blazing end have something to do with me not being able to describe music properly. Just listen to it. Oh! There's a girl in the band. She sings. Now GO!

One Heart Many Hands
Another solo project. Sheeeeesh. You'd think I'd be bored of these one-member wonders, right? Yeah, right. You know I'm not going to believe what I just said. One Heart Many Hands is Steve Hesselink - drummer, singer, guitar-player & he's a lot taller than you think. Although I've only seen him perform once and I don't think he's THAT cool, I'd have to say that when he gets into his performance, it's hard to turn away and find something else to do. Also, I believe that 'All of My Friends' is a song that I can't get bored of. The collective of bands that Hesselink is a part of (We're Marching On, The D'Urbervilles, Ohbijou, etc.) are all about friends 'n such. The love surely doesn't melt away in this collective.

The Adam Brown
When Zeus threw down his power, he created The Adam Brown, and The Adam Brown decided to create an album to thank the God of gods entitled "Lightin' Lightin'!" The Adam Brown are Montreal's power/stadium-rock soldiers. Anyone who dares to get in their way have to deal with J-Five - as in five across the eyes, Iris on the drums, Shawny on the guitar and Adam Brown ruling at the top of the podium. Falling on your knees and treating your guitar like a broomstick when you're pretending to play guitar is an awesome thing. The only difference is, these guys play REAL guitars and are plain REAL. REAL REAL REAL.

Basia Bulat
The real thing, one of the best voices I've heard in a long time, Basia Bulat, has been signed to Rough Trade Recordings. We'd discuss music and other issues. I'd tell her she'd amount to something that I knew would come soon. Basia didn't believe me, but only because she was being modest. It was only a few months later that her music was caught on by people of Rough Trade and she was signed for her debut release to go through them. Changing up the routine of most records of a folk record with a very talented band supporting her, Basia Bulat could work her way to the height of Regina Spektor if she plays her cards right. And, by playing her cards right, I mean being her sweet self and continuing to express herself the way she always has.
